Water Tank Projects

Dust-free removal of old paint on large diameter tank

Due to the age and deterioration of the existing coatings, the City of Apple Valley, Minnesota was required to rehabilitate existing coatings on their 4 million gallon ground storage tank. TMI received a contract from the City of Apple Valley for the sandblasting and painting of this tank.

Since the tank was located in a high traffic area with close proximity to neighbors, a complex containment system would normally be required to contain the sandblast sand and abide by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) regulations.

TMI successfully completed the job with our VACU-BLASTER, which provided the City with the most economical option for paint removal.

The fully-enclosed recyclable grit unit removes the paint with no emissions, at a faster rate than conventional sandblasting methods, and reduces the amount of contaminated waste for which the City is responsible. Both the interior and the exterior of the tank were completed with our VACU-BLASTER on schedule to the satisfaction of the owner.

Unique roof replacement project has local residents staring skyward

A handful of curious residents gathered at Bronx Park in St. Louis Park, Minnesota on July 23 and gazed up at a 95' wide metal dome which hovered quietly above their neighborhood. No, there weren't any frantic calls to the National Enquirer to report a UFO sighting. The residents were witnessing the conclusion of a unique water tank roof replacement project.

The need for replacement of the roof at Reservoir No. 1 became evident in 1996. Sandblasting performed prior to a painting project had exposed serious corrosion of the reservoir's steel roof. Having served the community since 1945, the effects of time and the elements had caused significant damage to the original roof. Because of the significant deterioration, a complete roof replacement was recommended.

"The corrosion was significant enough to warrant immediate action" said Bill Deitner, project manager for TKDA, the engineering firm responsible for the roof replacement project.

To ensure that the replacement of the roof would not hinder the completion of painting of the reservoir, TMI Coatings elected to construct the new aluminum roof in a ballfield adjacent to the reservoir. A 150-ton crane was used to hoist the roof frame into place.

"I was absolutely pleased with the entire roof replacement project" said Scott Anderson, Superintendent of Utilities for St. Louis Park.

Lead paint removed from windy city tanks

Rochester, Minnesota is known for the Mayo Clinic, its high quality of life, and for being the fourth windiest city in the continental United States.

TMI contracted with the City of Rochester to remove the lead paint from the exterior of their four water tanks. Three are located in neighborhoods and one is located in a shopping mall parking lot. The shopping mall tank is a "golf ball on a tee" style, holding 500,000 gallons of water and towering 175' tall. TMI completed removing lead paint from the tanks and met all of Minnesota's stringent pollution control policies with our own containment system. This contract (in the $1,000,000 range) was completed without injury, without claims, on time, and within budget.
